Management AI & Machine Learning

Context is key: A new framework for decision making.

Based on research by Samir Jarjoui, DBA and Renita Murimi, PhD, CISSP

Knowledge Management Systems (KMSs) are technologies that have developed as a tool for the storage and sharing of organizational knowledge and communication. Cognitive Knowledge Management Systems (CKMSs) evolved from KMSs due to their ability to harness information and knowledge to inform business decisions. This article proposes a CKMS that harnesses Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to facilitate deep learning in a contextual framework.

The proposed CKMS is conceptualized as a deep-learning solution informed by strategy, people, processes, and technology, and learning ability. The structure proposed is composed of nodes (processes), layers (deep learning, for relevant information extraction, and infrastructure, for the foundational building blocks), and edges (connections to related processes). The concept and structure combine to form a CKMS framework that enables organizations to efficiently collect, analyze, and consume its available knowledge for strategic decision-making.

Key Points

  • The limitations of Knowledge Management Systems (KMSs) led to the development of Cognitive Knowledge Management Systems (CKMSs).
  • This article proposes a CKMS utilizes deep learning in a framework composed of nodes, layers, and edges.
  • The proposed CKMS delivers relevant, significant insights for organizations due to the context that the framework provides

Why This Matters

The importance of CKMSs will only increase as organizations increase in size and complexity. Without sufficient frameworks such as the one proposed, organizations will possess the tools necessary to make informed business decisions, but will lack the cognitive power of effectively using those tools.

With the proposed CKMS framework, organizations will be better prepared for decision-making that requires the extraction and comprehension of information. By accounting for the complexity and diversity of relationships within a network, this CKMS creates the context necessary to make informed, strategic business decisions. The context that this CKMS provides ensures that leaders will be provided with information that is relevant and significant. This CKMS will create value by helping leaders to maintain a competitive edge within their industries through access to significant and relevant information organizational knowledge.
